10:00—10:35	A.Collinucci F-theory on singular manifolds Abstract We propose a completely new formulation of F-theory that allows us to work with singular manifolds directly. We are able to compute chiral spectra originating from M/F-theory compactifications on CY fourfolds with G-flux without having to resolve or deform singularities. Moreover, we can describe the F-theory lift of T-branes in a very natural way from this point of view.

Cvetic F-theory Compactification with Abelian Sectors and Un-Higgsing Download PDF Abstract We present the progress on systematic constructions of globally consistent F-theory compactifications with general rank n Abelian gauge sectors and exemplify it explicitly for  SU(5) GUTS with an additional U(1)x U(1) gauge group.  We develop general techniques to determine the gauge group sector; the chiral matter representations and their multiplicities; and Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, we study systematically the gauge group enhancements in the moduli space of these compactifications.

11:30—12:05	S. Schafer-Nameki Mordell-Weil meets Tate Download PDF Abstract U(1) symmetries are instrumental in building phenomenologically consistent global F-theory compactifications. Geometrically, U(1) symmetries are encoded in the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic Calabi-Yau that underlies an F-theory compactification. Of particular interest is to determine what classes of matter spectra and U(1) charges are possible in an F-theory compactification. This can be determined by applying Tate's algorithm to elliptic fibrations with Mordell-Weil group of rank 1 or higher. In this talk, I will summarize these results, and give an overview of the phenomenological implications of the resulting models.

We discuss the recent classification of all six-dimensional toroidal orbifold geometries that admit at least N=1 supersymmetry and discuss some of their generic phenomenological properties.

9:00— 9:55	A. Westphal String Cosmology - A Short Synopsis Download PDF Abstract Cosmology may be able to test the quantum gravity effects of string theory. We will try to give a short overview of recent progress in describing some aspects of cosmology in string theory. This will include string theory models of inflation in the light of Planck and BICEP2, as well as the cosmological effects of massive moduli and light axions as rather generic artefacts of viable string vacua.

Burgess Large-Field and Open EFTs, Decoherence and Inflation Download PDF Abstract Effective field theories (EFTs) usefully exploit the simplicity that follows from a hierarchy of scales, and provide the framework that justifies controlled semiclassical calculations with gravity. Inflation raises two conceptual questions for EFTs: What controls EFTs when fields are larger than the Planck scale? and What is the EFT governing extra-Hubble physics during inflation? This talks provides answers to both questions. Pseudo-Goldstone bosons are used as examples of controlled large-field EFTs, with the message being that these can lead to more general potentials than the usual trigonometric ones. It is argued that the EFT describing extra-Hubble physics exists, but is not capturable in terms of an effective lagrangian. The proposed EFT explains why primordial quantum fluctuations quickly decohere while outside the Hubble scale, re-entering as classical fluctuations in the field eigen-basis. It also explains why fluctuation probabilities are described by Starobinsky's stochastic framework, and provides a first-principles derivation of it (plus, in principle, its leading sub-dominant corrections).

In this talk, I will review the current status of dark matter and its origin and explore the scenarios where dark matter arises from moduli decays. I will also discuss baryon abundance and dark radiation in these scenarios.

Marsh A string theory Cosmic Axion Background and the cluster soft X-ray excess Download PDF Abstract Large classes of stabilised string models generically predict the presence a background of relativistic axion-like particles with ~0.1-1 keV energies in the present-day universe. I will discuss how such axions contribute to the dark radiation of the universe, and how the long-standing soft X-Ray excess in galaxy clusters may provide a hint of their existence. Taking the Coma cluster as my main example, I will discuss how some of the detailed predictions of this scenario compare to observational data.

15:05—15:40	Hebecker D7-brane Chaotic Inflation and F-theory GUTs with High-Scale SUSY Download PDF Abstract A new model of large-field inflation in string theory, `chaotic D7-brane inflation', which allows for a controlled supergravity description with moduli stabilization, will be reviewed. In this realization of the axion monodromy idea, the shift symmetry is broken by the flux-induced type-IIB superpotential. Subsequently, I will discuss precision gauge coupling unification and proton decay in the context of F-theory GUTs with high-scale SUSY breaking. It has recently been observed that, in F-theory, raising the SUSY breaking scale leads to a suppressed GUT scale. This is dangerous since, as our analysis shows, a signficant suppression of dimension-six proton decay induced by X,Y gauge bosons is difficult to realize. As a result, strong upper bounds (in the 100 TeV domain) on superpartners are obtained.
15:40—16:15	A. Sagnotti Pre-inflationary Clues from String Theory? Download PDF Abstract When “Brane supersymmetry breaking” occurs in String Theory the available combinations of D–branes and orientifolds are not mutually BPS and yet do not introduce tree–level tachyon instabilities. This setting is characterized by the emergence of a steep exponential potential, and thus by the absence of maximally symmetric vacua. The corresponding low–energy supergravity admits intriguing spatially–flat cosmological solutions where a scalar field is forced to climb up toward the steep potential after an initial singularity, and additional milder terms can inject an inflationary phase during the ensuing descent. We show that, in the resulting power spectra of scalar perturbations, an infrared suppression is typically followed by a pre–inflationary peak that reflects the end of the climbing phase and can lie well apart from the approximately scale invariant profile. A first look at WMAP9 raw data shows that, while the χ2 fits for the low–ℓ CMB angular power spectrum are clearly compatible with an almost scale invariant behavior, they display nonetheless an eye–catching preference for this type of setting within a perturbative string regime.

Weigand Mordell-Weil meets Standard Model Download PDF Abstract The Mordell-Weil group of elliptic fibrations in F-theory affects the gauge group, matter spectrum and Yukawa couplings of the effective action in important ways. We first describe how the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group determines global properties of the gauge group and thus restricts the spectrum of allowed matter representations. By contrast, its free part determines the spectrum of massless U(1) symmetries. We apply recent progress in our understanding of elliptic fibrations with two such U(1) groups to the construction of F-theory fibrations that can host the Standard Model gauge group and spectrum without the need for an intermediate GUT. We describe possible identifications of the Standard Model representations with the spectrum we find and discuss the resulting phenomenology of selection rules in the Yukawa couplings due to the presence of an extra U(1) symmetry.

Zavala Widening the de Sitter Landscape in Non-perturbative Flux Compactifications Download PDF Abstract I will present stable de Sitter solutions of N=1 supergravity in a geometric type IIB duality frame with the addition of non-perturbative contributions. By retaining the moduli dependence of both the tree level superpotential and its non-perturbative contribution, I will discuss a "single-step" approach that stabilises all moduli simultaneously in a de Sitter vacuum. The explicit solutions are found by means of a genetic algorithm.

Martucci Brane instantons in F-theory: the IIB perspective Download PDF Abstract Non-perturbative effects generated by Euclidean D3-brane (E3-brane) instantons in F-theory compactifications are often studied in terms of the dual M5-brane instantons in M-theory. However, the difficulties with the  Lagrangian formulation of the M5-brane theory make problematic any direct incorporation of non-trivial ingredients, which are generically present in flux compactifications. In this talk I will discuss how one can obtain a consistent formulation of the E3-brane effective action in F-theory compactifications directly in type IIB, as well as some of its implications. This formulation uses a variant of the topological twist, involving SL(2,Z) dualities and hence named topological duality twist. Three-dimensional duality walls and two-dimensional chiral theories naturally enter the formulation of the duality twisted theory.

Mayrhofer Gauge Data from Chow Groups and Massless Matter in F-Theory Download PDF Abstract I will start by reviewing how by means of Chow groups, i.e. rational equivalence classes of algebraic 2-cycles, we can access three-form data underlying the four-form flux G_4 of F-theory. Subsequently, I will show how to compute the number of charged localised massless matter states from this non-trivial three-form data for compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The approach will be exemplified by an SU(5)xU(1) toy model.
